IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alfonzo J.
Mccutchen
January 3, 1943 – January 24, 2021
Alfonzo John McCutchen Sr. age 78, loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and great grandfather went to be with his Lord and Savior after he lost his battle with COVID-19. He will truly be missed.
Al was a born and bred Memphian through and through. Born to parents Santa Maria Grisson and Newman Anthony McCutchen January 3,1943.
He played football and graduated from Humes High School in 1963, and married Martha McKnatt (Martha McKnatt Browning) in 1963. They had 2 sons together Alfonzo John McCutchen Jr (Junior McCutchen) and Leslie Thomas MCCutchen (Les). After many years as husband and wife they went their separate ways but remained friends. Later Al met and fell in love with Cathie Church. She became his wife and she brought 2 stepsons to the union, Trae and Jason Church. Al worked as a lieutenant for the Memphis Fire Dept. Fire House #20. After 25 years of faithful service he retired. He then worked full time construction for his own company, A & M Construction. He could do anything from the smallest electrical job, to buy, fix and flip older homes or build a home from the ground up. He did this until he completely retired at age 65. But he never stopped fixing things or tinkering. When Al's sons were growing up he coached every team they were on. Whether it was wrestling, baseball or soccer Al was there for his boys. And in the times when he couldn't coach he was on the sidelines cheering them on. Everyone could hear him. Plus he shot miles of video at every match and game. Al was all about family. Al's favorite days were having his kids and grandkids over. Fixing a large pot of his mother's special spaghetti that had 6 different meats from ground beef to pork chops. Her secret recipe. And after a big meal we would sit around the dinning table and play cards. Either Rook or his favorite Poker, 5 card stud. Al loved poker but he could never beat his grandson Nick. Al loved sports. All kind of sports. But he was a true Manning fan. He would never miss a football game that had Archie, Payton or Ellie Manning played in. Plaques of all 3 hang in his room. And Al would never miss the U of M basketball or football games. Even when he was in the hospital he called family asking when a game was going to be on. Al could always be heard saying, "Go Tigers!!!" Al is predeceased by his grandparents, parents, 3 brothers Joe Pat, Newman "Butch" & Chris McCutchen and his oldest son Alfonzo John McCutchen Jr. And 4 days after he passed his half sister Beatrice Dillard also passed from COVID-19 both at the same hospital at the same time. Al is survived by his wife Cathie Church McCutchen of Memphis TN. His first wife Martha Browning and her husband Van of Hot Springs Ark. "Junior's" wife Kimberlee McCutchen and her sons Shawn & Nick McCutchen of Memphis TN. Al's youngest son Leslie Thomas McCutchen(Les), his wife Tammy, sons Leslie Jr. and Jacob McCutchen. And daughter Mal Scott and son Edwin all of Hot Springs, Ark. His 2 stepsons Trae Church, his wife Joann, their children Josh Church and Breanna Wiseman with her son Parker, all from Olive Branch, MS. And stepson Jason, his children Jason Jr. with wife Mallory and children Kaden, Brett and Erin from Walls, MS. Al McCutchen will be sorely missed by his family and friends. And the McKnatt family whom he remained close with. Al leaves behind his wife, son, 3 daughter in laws, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Cathie McCutchen sends a special message to her husband Al McCutchen, "I will always love you Snuggles!" We love you. There will be no visitation nor Funeral service in order to protect our family and friends. Since we are unable to have any memorial service at this time in lieu of flowers please send donations to, "Catholic Charities of West TN in response to COVID-19", in memory of Al McCutchen a lifelong Catholic.
