IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Geraldine "Gerry"
Greer
October 8, 1936 – May 26, 2022
Geraldine (Gerry) Morton (Smith) Greer was born October 8, 1936 to James S. Smith and Geraldine Cox in West Point, Mississippi. The family later settled in Memphis, Tennessee.
Gerry became deaf at 18 months old due to a high fever. When she was 9 years old, she was sent to a Lutheran School for the Deaf in Detroit, Michigan. She made lots of friends for life, played sports, rode horses and learned sign language.
She came back home to Memphis where she graduated from Central High School. That was back in the day when there were no such thing as professional interpreters. Gerry had very good speech, read lips and received help from teachers and friends.
Gerry always loved horses! Every summer she would go to the family farm in Humboldt, Tennessee to ride her horse, Sue. She collected pictures and statues of horses.
Gerry and her husband, Charles (Mack), married in 1957 and had 65 years of marriage. They had two children, Greta (1959), and Gregg (1962).
Gerry worked in the Memphis City School system for 25 years in the Deaf Education Program helping other deaf children. She was also awarded Deaf Woman of the Year in 1989.
Gerry is survived by her husband, Charles (Mack) Greer, daughter, Greta and son, Gregg, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother, and aunts, uncles and cousins.
