The beloved Lebanese-American poet Kahlil Gibran once wrote, “Mother: the most beautiful word on the lips of mankind.” Amen, brother. Kathleen Allen Spencer, 76, of Memphis, TN, flew free of this mortal coil on July 24, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Born on June 22, 1950, in Memphis — to mother Janette Ward Allen, a legendary homemaker, matriarch, and food artiste, and father James Bolden Allen, a cigar salesman, watchmaker, and Cadillac enthusiast — she styled herself “Kathe with an E,” a classic diminutive of the ancient Greek name Aikaterine, meaning, appropriately, “pure.” Kathe graduated from Kingsbury High School, married her sweetheart, Danny H. Spencer, in 1970, raised three kids, ensured her home was always a loving one, worked at Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company with her sister, and studied to eventually become a medical research scientist and tech specializing in the electron microscope. In 1981, she was named an Outstanding Young Woman of America for her discovery of an amoeba she called “the fuzzy pickle.” She was always witty, often drily hilarious, and rarely content with her current sports car, including, sadly, a custom 1972 Oldsmobile 442 convertible that had been perhaps a little too souped up by the Petty garage. And, of course, she dearly loved her God, her family, her friends, and those Christ called “the least of these brothers and sisters of mine.” Kathe is survived by her husband, Danny; her daughters, Amy and Rachael Spencer, both of Memphis; and her son, Jeremy, and granddaughters Sophia, Daphne, and Francesca Spencer, of Portland, OR. She was preceded in eternal rest by her parents, her sister, Peachie, and her brother, David. A memorial service will be held beginning at 12 o’clock on Saturday, August 1, at Highland Heights Presbyterian Church, which she attended most of her life. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Shared Hope International and the International Rescue Committee, in her honor, for “the least of these.”
