Obituary

Michael Edward "Mike" Cheslock, 74, passed away on February 24, 2024, at his home in Memphis, TN. He took his last breath with dignity and peace, with the ones he loved beside him.

In his early years of high school, Mike ran track and played football at Kingsbury High School. He broke several Tennessee state records in track and was ultimately recruited to play football for Ole Miss but finished his college career at Arkansas State. He also earned a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education at Memphis State University.

Mike was a retired Lieutenant for the Memphis Police Department. He began his career at the South Precinct in 1970 and in 1976, became one of the original team members (dubbed "The Dirty Dozen") of the Tactical Unit. He remained in the Tactical Unit until the 1990's, also serving in many different units along the way. He served the Memphis Police Department honorably and proudly, retiring after over 25 years of service.

Mike loved motorcycles and spent years rebuilding his brother Ricky's 1972 Harley Davidson Sportster, something he loved doing and was very proud of. He also loved riding his own Vintage 1973 Harley. After his retirement, Mike became a member of the Wild Pigs Motorcycle Club, where he enjoyed brotherhood with other law enforcement officers. On a beautiful day, you would either find Mike out riding his motorcycle or walking Harley at the park. There was also nothing that Mike couldn't build or assemble and he took great pride in that. He was an avid modeler, crafting hundreds of models and was a fan of NASCAR and college football. He collected many various items and his family has found comfort and humor in those items that he so affectionately collected as a hobby. He was quick witted, had a great sense of humor and literally created his own version of the English language. His family affectionately referred to these as "Mike-isms" and his daughter Christy became the only person who could translate his Mike-isms.

Punctual and dependable should have been Mike's middle names, as he was always on time and always there to help those who needed it. If he told you he would pick you up at 9:00, you better be ready to go by 8:55. Procrastination was a word Mike didn't know and he always faced the day with a "to do" list. He stayed very active in his life, even through his diagnosis, when his family urged him to take it easy.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Laura Mae Cheslock, his brothers Richard and Steven; as well as many other family and friends he loved dearly.

Mike is survived by his four children, Lee Cheslock (Dina) of Birmingham, AL; James "Chris" Cheslock (Rachel) of Tunica, MS; Christy Gebo (Carmine) of Bartlett, TN; and Angie McCart (Eric) of Melbourne, AR. He leaves behind three grandchildren: Katie, Ayden and Drew Cheslock, all of Birmingham, AL.

Mike also leaves behind his best friend, Harley, who he loved taking to the park for walks several times a day. Harley was his world, his faithful companion until the very end, who will miss him dearly.

A visitation in memory of Mike will be Tuesday, March 19, 2024, 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Harmony Church of Bartlett, 6740 St. Elmo Road, Bartlett,Tennessee.

Mike's daughter, Christy found this verse, written in Mike's handwriting, in his bible after his death. It has brought great comfort to the family and they hope it will do the same for those who loved him: "The time has come for my departure, I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7

He will be sorely missed by his family; Life will never be the same without him. We love you Dad!
