Phyllis J. Bodner, 84, passed away peacefully at home on August 6, 2026 in Memphis, TN after a lifelong battle with type 1 diabetes and the ensuing complications. We are confident that she is now experiencing peace, health, and joy in the arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. She was born on May 6, 1942 in Sidney Center, NY to Forrest Kingsley Emerson and Dora Aliene Emerson and spent her growing up years in various towns in New England. Phyllis married Walter F. Bodner, Jr. on April 10, 1965, and she raised her family all over this country while supporting his military career. She earned her LPN certificate and worked variously as an LPN and a school nurse, and most recently as a beloved long-time teacher of 3 year olds at a local PDO. She was always active in her local church, Sunday school, and para-church organizations, giving generously of both her time and finances to causes she was passionate about. She was most at home in the riot of colors that she cultivated through gardening in her backyards, patios, and porches. She loved butterflies and birds, watching thunderstorms, observing sunsets, and particularly, staying connected with widespread family and friends. She was the “link” that kept her far-flung family connected. She cherished her Savior and was not ashamed to tell others about Him and how His “Amazing Grace” had changed her life. She had a great love for people and always looked for the best in individuals and situations, at times to her own detriment. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew her! Phyllis is survived by her brothers, Forrest Kingsley Emerson, Jr. and Gregory (Kathy) Emerson; her husband, Walt Bodner; her children, Jennifer Thompson and Cameron Bodner; her grandchildren, Marissa (Derek) Oase, Ryan (Payton) Thompson, Cheynna Naito, Joshua (Emily) Thompson, Collin Thompson, Jonathan (Katie) Thompson, and Brandon Bodner; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her son-in-law, Robert Earl Thompson, Jr. A memorial service will be held at the West Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Monday, September 14th at 11:00am for family and close friends.
